IS MACBETH A TRAGIC HERO?
Ultimately, Macbeth is the epitome of a tragic hero. These fatal flaws outlines his purpose of a tragic hero:
-
ambition to be the king
-
willingness to follow Lady Macbeth
-
hubris/arrogance
-
gullibility/naivety
-
will to test fate
-
greed for power
Though, despite his callous efforts of gaining a place on the throne, his demise would have never occurred if he had not been deceived by the Three Witches and Lady Macbeth. Macbeth had no ill intent at the beginning of the play, but due to his flaws, he meets a tragic end. That is why Macbeth is the embodiment of a tragic hero.
About Macbeth
Macbeth is a clear example of a tragic hero because he starts off as a great Scottish general who is recognized by the king and is noted for his bravery in the battlefield, but is soon caught up by the Witches’ prophecies and that ultimately leads him to the most unfavorable fate.
